Sleeping is the most awaited part of every tired person in a day. It gives everyone time to relax muscles and minds and restore energy for another day ahead. But how can we really define a good sleep? Is 8-hour of sleep enough to regain all the energies that we have lost? Or it is in the other way that we must consider things first upon concluding that our sleep is just enough for us to take another day again?
An experiment was been made to clearly identify the benefits of having enough sleep. Sarah Chalmers, a 46-year-old woman from the UK, took the challenge in a sleep deprivation experiment. She was observed for series of weeks to see if how sleep would affect and change her body state.
At the first part of the experiment, she slept for less than four hours. On the first half of the day, she felt just fine and not tired. During the afternoon, at 3pm, she felt tired and got a heavy feeling. She could compare it to a hangover where her head became quite heavy and she felt restless.
At the second part of the experiment, she slept for 5 hours up to 6 hours. For a couple of days, she felt like normal and just fine. In the middle of the week, she felt restless and always looking for sweets which could help to boost her energy. Aside from it, Sarah became irritable and looking older than her age.
At the third part of the experiment, Sarah slept for 8 hours or more. It appears to have a positive result when she looked fine and felt fine compared to the first and second part of the experiment. Her pores became smaller compared to the haggard look she has been. She also became less irritable and feels just right.
According to study, a lack of sleep leads to the production of cortisol which is a stress hormone. This hormone will make a person more irritable and anxious. Lack of sleep can also caused skin problems which activates the oil glands and can make skin feel greasy. This will also lead to stop the production of somatotropin hormones which can cause to stop growth. Symptoms of hormones issues were also observed to Sarah during her lacks of sleep.
The experiment only shows that enough nights of sleep can always bring the best of us. It can also make us look glowing and happy.
