Internet, nowadays, becomes our buddy. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Google, and a lot more sites are used to be visit by most of the people in everyday. As it became the needs by most, does the everyday usage of internet can be considered normal?
The findings were presented at the 29th European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) conference in Vienna where study about internet was been released. A survey found that people who use the internet for a long period of time daily can also have more mental health problems.
The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was developed in 1998 before the widespread use of smartphones and internet became widely used. Researchers of McMaster University in Canada studied internet usage of 254 students in college, the group where utmost in using internet, and correlated the results with their general mental health.
Based on their results in the IAT, 107 students suffered from internet addiction. The tests focused on illnesses like depression and anxiety, impulsiveness, inattention and executive functioning, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The students found out to be internet addicts are usually having trouble in time management, depression, and anxiety. They most likely feel depress and anxious for the time they were not connected in the internet, and the worst, if they are already connected, they usually no longer want to stop.
However, this study does not really guarantee that internet addiction causes those mental problems because of the several matters contradicting the results. Despite the fact that it causes trouble with time management, it will only depend on the users if they will get carried away with the overwhelming state internet may cause. After all, it is up to them on how they will control themselves from unnecessary addiction.
