Life is the greatest miracle of life. It is the most mysterious among the many mysteries of the world. We are endowed with life to live our purpose. Each and every one of us possessed a unique characteristic in terms of physical, mental, spiritual, and perspective. As we face our journey towards the satisfaction of the life we live, it is inevitable to encounter many challenges and troubles along the way. Whatever happens to this journey, what matters is how one faces it. It’s the view of life that differs in every one of us.
Brittany Lauren Maynard, an American woman from Portland, Oregon with terminal brain cancer decided to end her own life through euthanasia, or assisted suicide. She herself is an advocate of aid in dying. In front of her loved ones, she took her own life by administering a suicide drug. She was overdose with barbiturates. Because of what she did, she became the face of “the right to die”.
Contrary to Maynard’s disposition, the face of “the right to live” have emerged and fought for her life. Stephanie Packer, 33, was diagnosed with scleroderma, a chronic autoimmune disease in 2012 and was told that she had only three years to live. The disease of hers has no cure. Her insurance company refused to aid her for a chemotherapy session but was offered for suicide drug assistance for just $1.20. Wanting to prolong her life and correct what she thought was wrong, she sued the insurance company. As she won the rights to the drug, it prolonged her life, sparing her more time with her family.
She now battles a growing number of lawmakers in US states which permitted assisted suicide. As a devoted Roman Catholic, she wants to give her children a lesson. She said that she wants her kids to see that death is a part of life. She added that even if premature passing away is rampant and is preferable than bearing the pain, she’ll fight to live every single day, even if it’s depended on an oxygen tube. She’ll fight until she dies of natural death.
Death is inevitable. Death is a natural occurrence. Death has no option. Life is never life without death, and death is never death without life. However you may choose to live, just remember to live your life to the fullest.
